Recommended Websites

The following topics for Spanish, Science and Math have appeared in our Quarterly Newsletters. The links are reproduced here for your browsing convenience. In some cases, additional links are provided that were not found in the original article.

Spanish

Spanish: Spring ’06 Newsletter
Learning a foreign language in school used to be all about the books. The internet is changing that. Here are a few sites that I always recommend to my students:

Online dictionary: http://www.wordreference.com
NOT an online translation site—type in the word you want to say and a variety of entries will appear, allowing you to say exactly what you meant. The Oxford Spanish dictionaries are the best in paper, but this is the best (and easiest) online.

Verb conjugations: http://www.verbix.com/languages/spanish.shtml
Found the perfect verb, but aren’t sure how to conjugate it? Just type it in online, or download the program. If you prefer a book, I recommend All Spanish Verbs from A to Z by Larousse. ISBN: 2-03-533133-1

Grammar and vocab: http://spanish.about.com
Try to ignore the ads, and you’ll find everything from basic conjugating instructions to lists of commonly confused words.

Science

Science: Summer ’06 Newsletter
Summer is a great time to break away from the biology, chemistry, and physics textbooks, and have some fun with science:

How Stuff Works: http://science.howstuffworks.com
Maybe you want to know how the EZ-Rocket works. Or how about wiretapping (how DO professionals eavesdrop on conversations?). Ever wondered how GPS phones work? Find all this and more on this fun and easy to use website.

Science Toys: http://www.scitoys.com
“Make toys at home with common household materials, often in only a few minutes, that demonstrate fascinating scientific principles.” A great project for parents to work on together with their kids, keeping skills sharp over the summer, while still having fun.

Math

Math: Fall ’06 Newsletter
Because math is a cumulative subject, it’s critical to have a strong base in arithmetic and lower level math. The following websites will help build that base—and even make it fun!:

General math: http://www.edhelper.com
From pre-school math through geometry. Links to create your own
Kakuro puzzles, as well as many other types of puzzles. Also features links for other subjects, from social studies and reading comprehension, to test prep.

A Plus Math: http://www.aplusmath.com
Includes games, flashcards, and worksheets. Also features “step-by-step video instructions from actual teachers.”

AAA Math: http://www.aaamath.com
Creates random practice problems. Practice by topic, from addition to ratios to statistics.

Math Forum: http://www.mathforum.com
From their site: “...the leading online resource for improving math learning, teaching, and communication since 1992.” This site includes information through Calculus.
